Why was the Paid Work Placement programme of interest to you?

Committed to equality and diversity, SEMDC promotes from within and to be able to provide a member of the community with paid work, in a safe and nurturing environment where the candidate would be supported to learn new skills, build confidence and become part of team that is dedicated to supporting people who are deaf and from an ethnic minority.

Why did you select your chosen candidate and how have they adapted during their placement?

We had 3 candidates in mind; however, Sayed was the best fit for this job. He also showed great determination when practicing his interview skills. His genuinely kind nature, and willingness to help, put him first in line for the role.

Sayed has adapted well, considering this is his first time working in this industry, he has used all his transferrable skills and is an asset to the team. He is reliable and is becoming more self-motivated and his self-esteem is growing as he settles into his role.

What support has the participant received during their work placement?

Sayed has benefitted from peer support and shadowing other members of staff. He has been able to work alongside the Men’s group coordinator and learn team working skills and how to organise and prioritise his workload. Additionally, he is attending Glasgow Clyde College to improve English and Numeracy skills, and he has taken the lead, motivating and supporting others in the class and is an excellent role model for others.

What are the participant's aspirations at the end of the placement?

Sayed would like to remain in paid employment, ideally at SEMDC as he feels more confident and enjoys the work he does.

Are there any highlights or achievements so far from the participant's placement you would like to share?

We are very proud of the progress Sayed has made in a few months. His signing has improved hugely and for the first time, made a signed video for social media, which is no mean feat for anyone. He teaches hearing staff to sign and enjoys coming up with new ideas and participating in workshops to improve his wellbeing and social skills.

Quote from participant about their placement

"I am so happy to be working and learning at SEMDC. It is my very first experience of being in a signing environment where communication is no issue. This has improved every aspect of my life and I am grateful for this tremendous opportunity!"
