Role
This role will sit within the Commercial Department and support Glasgow Chamber of Commerce to capitalise on international opportunities for Scottish businesses in both home and overseas markets. The Commercial Team is responsible for delivering commercial revenue for the Chamber through membership, events, training, marketing and international trade activities.
The International Trade Development Executive will play a crucial role in expanding the Chamber’s global market presence and help drive international trade mission sales growth.
The International Trade Development Executive will be connected into local and global networks, seeking to support Scottish firms to expand internationally, enter new markets and fulfil their growth and productivity potential.
The International Trade Development Executive will support on the International Trade Partnerships project with Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Scottish Government and will be responsible for the successful delivery and reporting of international trade missions. A significant element of this role will be to engage both local and international partners, strengthen existing partnerships, and develop new relationships. The role will involve engagement on a city wide to global level with industry, academia and government, working across all sectors, with the aim of growing Scottish exports, imports and supporting Glasgow Chamber of Commerce’s members.
Main Activities / Responsibilities
Market Research and Analysis:
- Identifying and evaluating potential international markets for expansion and sourcing market intelligence.
Strategic Planning:
- Developing and implementing strategies to enter and grow in new and existing markets.
- Developing and building on existing international trade plans, as well as suggesting and implementing new ideas for future activities.
- Creating and implementing effective project plans for each stage of delivery, including preparation, execution and follow up.
Partnership Development:
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and partners, including agents and government bodies.
- Engaging with both local and international external stakeholders, helping to build collaborative relationships at a senior level across British Chambers of Commerce networks, as well as with UK and Scottish Governments and their agencies eg DBT and SDI.
- Engaging with industry across all sectors, both Chamber members and non-members, to increase engagement of Scottish businesses in international trade activities and ultimately grow Scottish exports.
- Delivering the International Trade Partnerships project that Glasgow Chamber is part of with Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Scottish Government. This will involve effective project management, including delivering successfully on budgets and reporting.
- Growing and delivering the Southeast Asia Business Network, with the aim of sourcing organisations interested in trading with and in Southeast Asia. This will require collaboration between senior partners across the region (most likely Singapore, Thailand & Indonesia).
Sales and Marketing:
- Leading international sales efforts and co-ordinating marketing campaigns tailored to specific regions.
Delivery:
- Leading the delivery of incoming and outgoing international trade missions and projects scheduled for 2025/2026 and 2026/2027.
- Acting as a point of contact for local and international business enquiries, providing international trade development support to Glasgow businesses and Chamber members.
- Supporting the Commercial Team to achieve their overall objectives and play a part in attracting new organisations into membership of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
- All other tasks required by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
Performance Monitoring:
- Tracking and analysing the performance of international trade activities and making data-driven decisions.
- Maintaining good records, using the Chamber’s CRM system, and ensuring timely completion of all paperwork required, including reporting, to unlock funding and all invoicing.
- Ensuring successful outcomes for the Chamber and Scottish businesses. This will involve achieving KPI targets and delivering on time and to budget.
Person Specification
- Experience in a relevant discipline advantageous
- Experience in stakeholder management and business development
- Experience in project delivery and being responsible for budgets
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of international stakeholders, including from industry, academia and government
- Understanding of different business cultures and how this might impact on working relationships with the Chamber and Chamber members
- Evidence of continual professional development
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as autonomously
- Self-starter and can take initiative
- Skills to support strategic planning
This role includes overseas travel.
This role also includes events outside of normal office hours.
