Scottish Climate Week (29 September – 5 October) is an opportunity to reflect on our environmental impact and take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future.
For businesses in Glasgow, it’s also a chance to explore how the circular economy can unlock new opportunities; not just for the planet, but for profitability, innovation, and resilience.
What is the Circular Economy?
The circular economy is a model that focusses on designing out waste, keeping materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. Unlike the traditional linear economy which follows a “take, make, dispose” pattern, the circular economy encourages reuse, repair and remanufacturing.
In Glasgow, circularity is more than a concept.
It’s a key part of the city’s Net Zero by 2030 strategy and a driver of sustainable economic growth. From food and fashion to construction and tech, businesses across a range of different sectors are finding new ways to reduce waste, cut carbon, and create value.
How are we helping?
Circular Glasgow and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce lead the way on supporting businesses across the city, influencing positive change. Programmes like Step Up To Net Zero have helped over 90 businesses so far, as well as providing reskilling opportunities through funded placements.
The development of the ACTS Toolkit has made it easier than ever for businesses across Scotland to begin their own journey into sustainability, supporting them with free resources to tackle climate change.
Circular Glasgow’s Leadership Programme influences senior management and business leaders, equipping them with the skills required to recognise the value of circularity and collaboration within the city.
Our Circular Glasgow Network and Mixer event series help to spotlight some of the fantastic work taking place around Glasgow, facilitating discussion and sharing best practice to spark ideas.
Why Circular Economy Makes Business Sense
For SMEs, circular practices are a real opportunity for growth and innovation.
Switching to reusable packaging, sourcing refurbished equipment, or collaborating with other local businesses, circular actions are both practical and profitable.
