Half a year at the chamber – how time flies!

By Ben Cornelius, Membership Executive

At the time of writing this, I am sat next to Alan Busby, who has just celebrated his 20th year at the Chamber, and Anne Marie, who has double that, with 40 years! Big congrats to you both on those milestones!

And it is hard to feel as though 6 months is an accomplishment in comparison, but it is my accomplishment, nonetheless.

I have worked with the Whistler Chamber of Commerce before, but have only just realised how integral a Chamber is to the city business landscape from my time at this Chamber.

We touch on so many aspects of the city, from creating and curating a business community, to supporting businesses on their journey to net zero, to international trade and development, all the way to Developing the Young Workforce. Which Is pretty incredible!

I have really enjoyed the last 6 months at the Chamber. The role is extremely people focussed, and as someone that loves meeting new people, it is a great fit. The membership team go out to meet our members, understand their needs and offer support where we can. And it’s great to have a role that combines being a people person, and being able to help people as well.

One of my favourite parts of this role is meeting our members at their offices, looking out their window and seeing what the city skyline looks like from all around Glasgow. It so interesting to see the landmarks from a different perspective. I am sure there is a metaphor in that…

It has also been exciting to watch the George Square redevelopment right from our office window!

As much as I do love a speed networking lunch, or even our curry club, I do find that the Glasgow talks series of events to be the most interesting, as I am always taking away something important about the city. A particular highlight was the first one I attended, where Susan Deighan (Now former Glasgow Life chief exec) shared the impact that culture can have, and how Glasgow is punching above our weight.

It has been a great 6 months at the Chamber, and I cannot wait to see what the next 6 months will hold! Will I beat Alan’s 20-year record?! Who knows!

If you are a member and we haven't connected yet, then please reach out as I would love to meet you!
