ESOL Learning for Employability

The ESOL Learning for Employability Programme—or LEAP programme—is designed to support up to 300 refugees living in Glasgow who will benefit from an intensive English language course and tailored employment support.

The programme is proposed by Glasgow Life as the statutory lead for Community Based Adult Learning in the City with the support of the technical expertise of Klik2learn as a recognised industry leader in digital learning for ESOL along with sector-specific vocational courses. The programme will support the expressed aims and objectives of the City CLD Strategic Plan for the City.

The programme recognises that many ESOL learners already possess strong professional and vocational backgrounds, but lack the reading, writing, listening and communication skills to perform confidently in a workplace environment. In addition, they may need specific job-related vocabulary and terminology to fulfil their potential and ensure compliance with safe work practices.

The programme recognises that most refugees have a very strong commitment and aspiration to secure employment and that by removing barriers to that through high-quality bespoke learning, the city and associated employment agencies, will be better placed to meet local, city and regional objectives.

The programme also recognises responsibilities placed on local authorities through the New Scots Strategy to provide wrap-around services that prepare New Scots for full civic, cultural and economic integration into Scottish society.

It is proposed that three cohorts of ESOL learners will be supported into employment in the Care Sector, Catering and Hospitality and Construction alongside a general cohort. The programme is being funded by the Scottish Government.

Glasgow Life will work with colleagues in the Department of Work and Pensions, Skills Development Scotland and Jobs and Business Glasgow to identify and refer learners into the programme.

Klik2learn will deliver a bespoke ESOL/ employability programme to ensure learners have completed a rigorous, blended learning programme with assessment and are ready to progress in their chosen field.

Post learning work placements sourced through several major employability partners will provide the best opportunity to gain both work placements and job opportunities.
