George Square Redevelopment Project Update

Glasgow City Council have provided the following update on the progress of the George Square redevelopment:

"Since our last communication, Rainton Construction has taken possession of the site and commenced preparatory works within the square. Protection measures have been put in place around the Cenotaph and Sir Walter Scott monuments in advance of restoration works.

From Tuesday, 24th June, works will begin outside the site hoarding, starting on the north-west footway of West George Street, between Buchanan Street and Dundas Street. Glasgow City Council and Rainton Construction have been engaging with businesses along this frontage to minimise disruption as much as possible. Please note that the bus stop on this footway will be temporarily closed for this phase of work – pedestrians should use the bus stop at Queen Street Station during this time.

Meanwhile, activity within George Square continues, with Rainton assessing ground conditions in preparation for the relocation of statue plinths. Existing kerbs suitable for reuse within the project are also being carefully set aside.

Please note that the western corners of the hoarding will be extended by approximately 2 metres to facilitate enabling works for the new statue locations, this work is programmed to start on Wednesday 25th June."
