Barrhead Travel marks 50 years of making memories for millions of holidaymakers

Barrhead Travel, one the UK’s most recognisable travel firms, has marked the start of its 50th anniversary celebrations with an event at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket, just a stone’s throw away from its flagship store on Gordon Street.

Founded by the late Bill Munro, a former banker, the company began as a single store in Barrhead that opened beyond traditional hours and was designed to allow customers to book holidays on their terms. His vision quickly transformed into a seven day a week operation, reshaping how holidays were booked on the high street.

Now with over 90 locations across the UK, two specialist cruise brands, a Canada division and a homeworking and franchise division, Barrhead Travel has flourished into a multifaceted and award-winning business but remains firmly rooted in its Glasgow heritage.

The company has weathered some of the industry’s biggest challenges from 9/11 and the 2008 financial crash, to the collapse of Thomas Cook and the Covid-19 pandemic. At every stage, Barrhead Travel has adapted: from launching charter flights, investing in digital innovation, and even retraining colleagues as NHS contact tracers during lockdown.

At the heart of Barrhead Travel’s success story is its people. Many of the senior team have been with the business for decades, having worked their way up from junior roles including President Jacqueline Dobson, who also marked her own milestone during the evening, celebrating 25 years with the company. Apprentices, too, remain a cornerstone of the business, reflecting a long-standing commitment to nurturing young talent.

Jacqueline Dobson added: “While so much has changed, the heart of the business remains the same. We’re here to solve problems, support our people, and ultimately deliver unforgettable holidays.

“Our resilience over the decades has only strengthened our belief in what we do. It’s our people, our customers, and our communities that have shaped this journey. Celebrating 50 years is not just about looking back, it's about looking forward with confidence, staying true to our roots while continuing to evolve.”

As Barrhead Travel looks ahead, there are no signs of slowing down, with plans for continued investment and expansion on the high street as well as launching new technology. The business has had a record-breaking year, with January 2025 being the most successful month in its 50-year history. It believes its founding principles, customer service, innovation, and community, are as relevant today as they were in 1975.
