A team from Blackadders LLP braved a firewalk to raise funds for the Dundee Maggie’s Centre as part of a charity of the year partnership with the cancer support provider. Maggie’s run centres for those diagnosed with cancer and their families.
Twelve members of the Dundee Private Client team took part in the challenge, raising more than £5,000.
Those taking part were Blythe Petrie, Dale Ross, Jacqueline Cameron, Jacqueline Guthrie, Joanne Urquhart, Kim Dewar, Laura McDowall, Lindsey Brown, Lorna Christine, Louise Howie, Molly MacQueen and Robyn Lee.
The Dundee Private Client team established a partnership with Dundee Maggie’s Centre last year by providing a free Will-writing service.
In the past year, around £25,000 worth of Wills were prepared for people with cancer using Dundee Maggie’s Centre. Private Client solicitors attended the Maggie’s Centre in Dundee on the second Monday of every month and met with clients throughout the day to provide advice on complex personal circumstances and to draft Wills and Powers of Attorney for individuals who are vulnerable, contemplating end of life and what this means for their friends and relatives.
The aim was to offer guidance and peace of mind to ensure that those at a very difficult stage of their lives could focus on their health and wellbeing. Due to the time pressures involved, the team at Blackadders ensures that documents are prepared, given to clients for approval and then signed in short turnaround times.
This service started in Dundee but has been such a success that it is in the process of being rolled out by Blackadders at Maggie’s Centres in Glasgow and Aberdeen in 2025. More fundraising opportunities are also being planned throughout 2025 to support Maggie’s across Scotland.
Laura McDowall, Head of the Private Client Team, said: “We are passionate about supporting Maggie’s. As we have been giving our free Will support, we have seen what a valuable service Maggie’s provides and how dedicated and supportive the staff are with centre users. We hope to expand our work to other centres this year and the firm has adopted Maggie’s as our Charity of the Year. We are already planning several fundraising initiatives at all our offices.
We are proud to support Maggie’s and to support our team who are determined to raise as much as they can this year.”
The Blackadders’ board has agreed that whatever is raised by the team will be doubled by the firm. Last year, Blackadders raised almost £15,000 for Sistema.
Annie Long, Centre Fundraising Manager for Maggie’s in Dundee said: “Maggie's in Dundee, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh and all our centre visitors are most grateful to Blackadders for choosing Maggie's Centres as their charity of the year.
Along with supporting so many of our fundraising events, Blackadders has been working in partnership with us to provide a monthly Free Will Writing service from our centres. Our visitors appreciate this service so much at a time in their lives when this service relieves anxiety for them. The fundraising will go towards our Scottish centres to continue to provide emotional care for people with cancer and their friends and family. “
