We all want a prosperous Scotland, with good jobs. How do we build that?
Our Scottish Future, in association with the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, are hosting a conference on 6 June Scotland: creating the jobs of tomorrow to share practical ideas for how we achieve that.
Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown is pulling together experts from around the world to chart a way forward.
We have a nation bursting with potential. So many of the ingredients for success are already present – great people, a trusted brand as a nation, some companies at the forefront of innovation, some of the world’s best universities, and great connections with the wider world.
How can we turn these ingredients into the levels of prosperity that we aspire to? And why does that matter?
Let’s start with why it matters. Obviously, the creation of good, well-paid jobs is central to most people’s aspirations for how to make the most of their talents and provide for their families. But it matters more widely than that. We all benefit from a more prosperous economy if we use that prosperity to create opportunities for the people who are currently furthest from the labour market, and invest in giving all our children a good start in life.
As set out in Our Scottish Future’s economic blueprint From Growth to Good, we need to ‘raise the roof and lift the floor’.
We need to ‘raise the roof’ through increasing economic growth and wealth generation.
We need to ‘lift the floor’ by making sure that everyone benefits from shared prosperity, including the most vulnerable in society.
So how do we achieve levels of growth that will let us build a better society?
One of the key drivers has to be innovation – taking the great ideas that are being developed in universities and industry and turning them into great products and high-quality jobs.
The conference will discuss ways of achieving that. We’ll hear from leading experts including Nobel Prize-winning economist Michael Spence. We’ll hear from Scottish entrepreneurs who have worked internationally about how they’ve translated ideas into business success and high-quality jobs. We’ve got leading international investors coming to share their perspectives how to create growth, including former Covid vaccines task force chair Dame Kate Bingham, and Kasim Kutay who leads the investment foundation of the world’s most valuable life sciences company Novo Nordisk. We’ll also have key figures from the world of politics and government to discuss how policy, at UK and Scottish levels, can support innovation-led growth.
Your input will be important – there will plenty of time for discussion, and for you to share your perspectives on how we can harness innovation to create prosperity.
