TLT solidifies Scottish strength in Legal 500 rankings

National law firm TLT has been ranked in 10 submission areas across its Edinburgh and Glasgow offices in the Legal 500 UK rankings 2025 – an independent guide to the legal sector.

The firm has risen in two practice areas, in Energy and Insolvency and Corporate Recovery and has also maintained a tier one ranking in Licensing – a position it has held since 2020.

The rise in the ranking for the energy team follows a highly successful year which has seen the team work on several high-value deals on the cutting edge of the UK’s energy transition. This includes advising Intelligent Land Investments Group on the sale of one of the first new PSH projects to be built in the UK for over 40 years and supporting renewable energy infrastructure firm Field on its acquisition of the Scottish Holmston and Drum Farm battery energy storage sites .

The restructuring and insolvency team has also risen to a Tier three ranking under the leadership of Ainslie Benzie, who was promoted to partner in March. The team’s work has included advising Interpath Limited on the appointment of joint administrators for Le Chardon D’or Limited and acting for the directors of the award-winning Scottish seaweed business, Mara Seaweed Limited on a successful application to the Court of Session for an administration order.

TLT’s licensing team is the largest in Scotland and is known for advising a wide range of clients across a number of sectors. Stephen McGowan, the head of the firm’s Scottish licensing team was recently recognised for his leadership of the team by winning ‘Lawyer of the Year’ at the Scottish Legal Awards.

TLT was also ranked in the banking and finance, commercial property, corporate and commercial, debt recovery, employment, immigration, licensing and professional negligence categories.

12 lawyers from TLT’s Edinburgh and Glasgow based offices were ranked in this year’s guide including Peter Smartt (Banking and Finance), Julie Nixon (Intellectual Property) and Fiona Armour (Banking and Finance) who moved up a ranking to the Leading Associate category.

John Paul Sheridan, TLT’s head of location in Scotland commented: “Our latest rankings in the legal 500 are based on the feedback of our clients and our strong positions reflect the excellent service we continue to offer the market as well as the depth and breadth of our expertise. We continue to invest in our team in Scotland and look forward to another successful year in 2025.

Legal 500 UK is an annual guide to the UK legal sector and used by buyers of legal services. It ranks law firms and lawyers across legal specialisms and geographic regions, identifying the most highly respected legal professionals in their areas of expertise.
