Employment law expert's warning on National Sickie Day

Liam Entwistle, an employment law expert at leading law firm Wright, Johnston & Mackenzie LLP (WJM) said:

"As we approach 'National Sickie Day' on Monday 5 February, it's essential to shed light on the significance of responsible and proactive measures employers can take regarding sickness.

"While the day may not be marked by greeting cards just yet, the impact of employee absences is far from celebratory for both employers and employees alike.

“The dark and stormy January we've experienced has taken a toll on many, leading to a surge in sick days as individuals grapple with various illnesses since the start of the New Year.

“But as we anticipate the arrival of Spring with brighter nights and, hopefully, warmer days, it's crucial for employers to approach sickness absences with an open and curious mindset.

“A robust return-to-work interview practice serves as both a deterrent for unplanned absences and a crucial channel for understanding employee wellbeing.

“Employers should be mindful of the legal implications, as the law on disability discrimination can apply even when conditions are not fully appreciated.

“By championing responsible employment practices, employers not only foster a healthy workplace culture but also contribute to the overall well-being of their workforce.”
