National Manufacturing Institute Scotland

Industry:  Manufacturing

About the organisation:

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), operated by the University of Strathclyde, is the future of manufacturing located at the heart of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland.

It is where industry, academia, and the public sector work together on ground-breaking manufacturing research to transform productivity levels, make companies more competitive and boost the skills of our current and future workforce.

Key sustainability highlights:

  • Working with a German manufacturer, NMIS collaborated on a project that saw the development of more efficient, lighter weight car batteries to reduce CO2 emissions
  • Engineers from our NMIS specialist technology centre, the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre, worked with industry partner ACT Blade and a consortium of partners to develop an ultralight and sustainable wind turbine blade and bring it to market.
  • The Manufacturing Skills Academy, operated by NMIS, offers training to encourage people to upskill and re-skill in areas that support net-zero goals

In detail:

NMIS and TGM

NMIS collaborated with German lightweighting specialists TGM Lightweight Solutions to design a car battery concept that can reduce weight, production costs and vehicle CO2 emissions while providing an improved battery life expectancy without compromising power.

NMIS and ACT Blade

Engineers from the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre worked with ACT Blade and a consortium of partners to research, design and produce a lighter weight composite to replace heavy glass fibre wind turbine blades resulting in a blade that is longer, generates up to 9% more energy, and costs 30% less than conventional blades.

Manufacturing Skills Academy

As the industrial landscape evolves, new technologies present transformative opportunities for manufacturers. But to embrace them, manufacturing businesses need to know that their workforces are equipped with the requisite skills. The NMIS Manufacturing Skills Academy offers advanced manufacturing training and development opportunities for people at all career levels.
