Glasgow City Council have provided the following update on the progress of the George Square redevelopment:
"Since the last update, works have continued to progress steadily around the Square. Construction along the south footway between South Frederick Street and Hanover Street is nearing completion, with the exception of the Hanover Street section, which will be completed at a later date (TBC).
On 11 May, the south carriageway will close between The Piper Bar and Greggs to facilitate construction works. These works are anticipated to take approximately three months to complete. The junction at Greggs / La Vita will remain open during this period to help alleviate pressure on the traffic network, which has experienced disruption in recent months due to the Union Street fire and the sewer collapse on Cathedral Street. NRS has undertaken a letter drop to affected stakeholders in the vicinity of George Square South to better understand servicing and loading requirements during the closure.
On the north side of the Square, carriageway works are continuing. The contractor has laid setts along the straight sections of the road, with junction areas at North Hanover Street and North Frederick Street to be completed in the coming weeks. The targeted completion date for the carriageway is 7 June, after which the road will be reopened to traffic.
There will be a temporary road closure on West George Street between 18 May and 27 May to allow resurfacing works to be carried out between Buchanan Street and George Square as part of the project. Access for servicing businesses on Nelson Mandela Place will be available between 6pm and 10am via Bath Street and Buchanan Street, with exit via Buchanan Street and St Vincent Street. A temporary taxi rank will be established on the east side of North Hanover Street, between George Square and Cathedral Street, during this period.
Within George Square itself, all groundworks on the west side have now been completed, allowing paving works to commence within the hoarded area for the first time. Good progress has been made over the past two weeks, and the coming weeks should begin to provide a clearer indication of the final appearance of the Square. Restoration works to the Sir Walter Scott Monument are also progressing well, with replacement of stone courses on programme for completion by the end of May. Following this, a significant portion of the scaffolding will be removed, and cleaning of the lower section will commence.
On the east side of the Square, works to the Cenotaph continue to progress well. Groundworks behind the Cenotaph are underway to install utilities in support of the new street lighting design for the Square."
