Glasgow Regional Opportunities for Work (GROW) has reached an important milestone, with KPMG becoming the 100th employer to take part in the programme. This moment reflects a growing movement of businesses across the Glasgow City Region choosing to play an active role in shaping a more inclusive, skilled and confident future workforce.
GROW is based on evidence that meaningful, repeated engagement with employers can help young people from deprived areas build aspirations, break down barriers and make more informed decisions about their future. By opening doors to real workplaces and real people, employers help young people see what is possible and where they might belong in the world of work.
Backed by investment from JPMorgan Chase and delivered by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Glasgow City Region DYW groups, employers involved in GROW span a wide range of sectors and sizes. Organisations such as ScottishPower, Morgan Stanley, Centrica, DXC Technology and easyJet have welcomed young people into their workplaces and delivered hands on, interactive experiences. Employer feedback highlights the positive impact of these visits, valuing the opportunity to inspire young people, challenge perceptions and showcase the breadth of roles within their organisations.
KPMG joining the programme as the 100th employer underlines the strength of GROW’s business led approach. Through participation, employers are not only supporting young people but also strengthening their own connection to future talent, developing staff through volunteering and contributing to Glasgow’s long-term economic resilience.
Data from the first 18 schools within the GROW programme clearly demonstrates the early impact of the programme. More than 5,500 hours of work experience were delivered through 68 employer organisations with 98% of students completing the first phase.
Participation also reflected GROW’s commitment to promoting inclusive access to opportunity, with 37% of pupils with additional support needs and 15% from minoritised communities engaged in the programme. Outcomes for young people were strong, with 95% reporting increased confidence in understanding different types of jobs and 96 % feeling welcome throughout the programme. From an employer perspective, 87% said taking part added value to their organisation.
As the programme moves into its next phase, there are still many opportunities for businesses to get involved.
By participating in GROW, businesses can help inspire the next generation and play a meaningful role in building a stronger, more inclusive Glasgow.
