Glasgow Central Station: Ongoing Travel Disruption Updates

To support the local business community following the Union Street fire in Glasgow city centre, we’ll be sharing the latest information and updates on the ongoing disruptions.

ScotRail

The normal timetable from Glasgow Central High Level resumed on Wednesday 25 March, after work was completed to reinstate the remaining platforms at the station.

After more than a fortnight of disruption caused by a fire in a building on Union Street, platforms one to 15 can now be used.

We had been unable to operate services on a number of routes, but with all platforms available, ScotRail services returned to:

  • Edinburgh – Glasgow Central via Shotts/Carstairs.
  • Glasgow Central – Cathcart Circle.
  • Glasgow Central – Paisley Canal.
  • Glasgow Central – Newton.
  • Glasgow Central – Barrhead.
  • Glasgow Central – Neilston.

Alterations which were in place for the following services during the disruption also ended:

  • Glasgow – Ardrossan Harbour.
  • Glasgow – Largs.
  • Glasgow – Dumfries/Carlisle.
  • Glasgow – Stranraer.

We are advising customers to check their journey before travelling.

They can do so via the ScotRail website, app, and through our social media channels. Station staff are also on hand across the network to help where possible.

The reopening of the remaining platforms has been confirmed following comprehensive safety checks by Glasgow City Council and Network Rail and as the safe demolition of the building next to the station continues.

Public safety remains the priority so not all entrances and exits to the high level are open. An exclusion zone around the area worst affected by the fire is still in place so the entrances to the station on Gordon Street and Union Street will remain closed until further notice.

Customers will be able to enter and exit the station via:

  • Upper Hope Street (adjacent to Waterloo Street, next to the Voco/Grand Central Hotel), which reopened to customers on Sunday.
  • The access point known as the carriage driveway, which is used during special events.
  • The low level areas on both Hope Street and Argyle Street.

Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast resumed its full timetable at Glasgow Central from Wednesday 25 March, when all high-level platforms reopened following the major fire on Union Street.

The intercity operator is operating two trains per hour to and from Glasgow Central – resuming its full service at the station.

Avanti West Coast’s Ticket Office and First Class Lounge also reopened for customers on Wednesday 25 March.

With a small exclusion zone still in place at the high-level station, there may be some changes to boarding services – with Avanti West Coast staff on hand to help customers.
