Podcast Studio Glasgow partners with PFA Scotland to support footballers’ future careers

PFA Scotland has teamed up with Podcast Studio Glasgow to deliver a new training programme designed to help professional footballers explore careers in podcast hosting and production once their playing days come to an end.

Organised by Scotland’s PFA - the independent trade union for professional footballers in Scotland, the initiative offers practical, hands-on training for players interested in developing media skills that can potentially open doors beyond football after their retirement.

The 10-session weekly programme focuses on teaching the fundamentals of podcast creation, from presenting and storytelling to production and behind-the-scenes know-how.

The training is led by father-and-son duo Mark Hunter and Cam Hunter, who run Podcast Studio Glasgow. Mark is widely recognised as Scotland’s first podcaster, having launched his first show in 2005 - years before podcasting entered the mainstream - and brings two decades of experience in the medium.

Mark Hunter said: “Footballers often have incredible stories, strong personalities and a real connection with audiences, but many don’t realise there’s a genuine career path in podcasting beyond simply being a guest or starting a show.

“This programme is about giving players the confidence and skills to understand the industry properly, whether that’s behind the mic or behind the scenes, and helping them see what’s possible after their football career.”

Chris Higgins, Player Services Manager at the PFA Scotland, said: “PFA Scotland is committed to supporting our members in their personal development and future planning, ensuring a smooth transition into a new career when the time comes to retire from professional football.

“Podcasting continues to grow in popularity and offers a flexible opportunity that can be pursued alongside a playing career. Working alongside Podcast Studio Glasgow, we have developed a course that enables our members to explore opportunities within the podcasting industry. The programme is designed to fit around our members’ football commitments while providing the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in podcasting.”

The partnership reflects a growing focus on preparing players for life after football, equipping them with creative, transferable skills that align with today’s media landscape.

For those with a passion for storytelling, conversation and content creation, the programme offers a supported pathway into a rapidly expanding industry.
