Glasgow schoolchildren will experience a different route out of the city when they head to Troon for the famous annual Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund trip to the Ayrshire coast next Wednesday.
A seven-day countdown to one of the big events of the Scottish summer began this morning when pupils from Hazelwood Primary School in Glasgow met some of the volunteers and drivers giving up their days for free.
A 125+ strong colourful convoy of taxis will transport around 300 children from a number of city schools for another day to remember, welcomed to Troon by hundreds of well-wishers ahead of an afternoon by the beach with music, entertainment, fun and games.
Following the Union Street fire earlier this year, as well as ongoing closures in and around George Square as its redevelopment continues, a new route has been agreed with stakeholders for the taxis leaving Glasgow.
Stephen Lalley, of charity the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund which organises the trip, said: “This year, the taxis will travel along Sauchiehall Street towards Charing Cross before turning right on to Newton Street and joining the motorway to Troon. Due to the restrictions currently in place within Glasgow city centre, this route has been identified as the most practical and efficient option for the outing. We hope that these measures will be temporary and that, next year, we will be able to return to travelling through the city centre as part of the traditional route.
“Everyone at the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund would like to thank Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland for their support and assistance in providing this alternative route out of Glasgow, ensuring all the children can once more enjoy this special day which produces a lifetime of memories.”
The famous Glasgow Taxis trip to Troon sees more than 300 children with additional support needs enjoy a day at the seaside thanks to the generosity of 100+ drivers, plus many more volunteers.
Major supporters of the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund trip to Troon include Glasgow Taxis Ltd, Cab Direct, Celtic FC Foundation, The Moulsdale Foundation, Butchershop Bar and Grill and Girvans Bar Troon.
Members of the public wishing to cheer and wave the taxis can do so from Kelvin Way between 10.30am and 11am and immediately thereafter along Sauchiehall Street and on to Charing Cross.
