Construction Aware is an ambitious, industry led skills programme co-designed by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, DYW Glasgow and partners from across the city. Fresh from winning the BEST ‘Accelerate to Net Zero: Skills Impact Award', the initiative is now expanding and we are inviting more businesses to get involved and help inspire Glasgow’s next generation of construction talent.
The construction and built environment sector continues to face challenges with recruitment, retention and future skills needs. At the same time, many young people struggle to understand the range of opportunities available in the sector or gain the experience they need to get started. Construction Aware has been developed to bridge that gap.
About the Programme
Construction Aware, now in its third year, is an initiative that supports young people from S3 to senior phase through a mix of practical interventions, accredited training and real-world experience with Glasgow’s leading construction employers. Through employer site visits, skills-based activities and direct engagement with staff, young people gain a stronger understanding of the industry from pre-construction to post-construction roles.
The programme has been codesigned with organisations including Robertson Construction, McTaggart Construction, CCG, A.C. Whyte, RJ McLeod, Sibbald, COWI and Glasgow City Council Education Services. One hundred percent of young people who took part in the pilot reported an increased awareness of the scale and variety of careers in the construction sector.
Why Your Business Should Get Involved
With around 30 employers and over 400 pupils already engaged, we are now expanding our partner network to meet growing demand. Whether you are a large contractor or a specialist SME, your organisation can play a meaningful part in shaping future talent and supporting the sector’s long-term growth.
Businesses taking part benefit from:
Construction Aware is delivered in partnership with DYW Glasgow and FARE Scotland, and supported by Glasgow City Council, Landsec, Wheatley Group, B&CE and a wide network of industry contributors.
Employer feedback shows that participating not only helps address skills shortages but also brings a renewed sense of purpose and energy to teams who enjoy supporting young people at a formative stage in their career journey.
If you are an employer in the construction or built environment sector, we would love to hear from you.
