Glasgow hearing experts have praised a new Peppa Pig storyline that reveals younger brother George has moderate hearing loss as a significant step forward in raising awareness of childhood hearing loss in the city and beyond.
Audiologists at The Hearing Clinic UK, based in Glasgow’s St Vincent Place and supporting more than 50,000 patients across Scotland and England, believe the new plotline will help children who require hearing aids, as well as their families.
Dominique Stone, clinic governance lead at the independent hearing healthcare provider, said the storyline will raise important awareness of childhood hearing loss and the support available to families navigating a diagnosis.
She said: “Having a storyline like this featuring such a household name as Peppa Pig is a very positive step forward for public understanding of hearing health.
“The fact the storyline is based on moderate hearing loss is especially powerful because it reflects the reality that hearing challenges are not always obvious.
“It will also be important in helping to normalise the process of hearing assessments, hearing aid fittings, and the necessary acclimatisation period, and reducing stigma around hearing loss.”
The upcoming episode, which has been developed in partnership with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS), will see George attend an audiology appointment, where his family discovers he has moderate hearing loss in one ear and he is then fitted with a new hearing aid.
Dominique added: “The collaboration with the NDCS is wonderful for making families aware of the support available to them.
“The fact George has moderate hearing loss in one ear is particularly significant. Children with unilateral hearing loss can struggle in noisy environments, which can have a real impact in classroom settings and social situations. Showing this on screen helps people understand that even a ‘mild’ or ‘moderate’ loss can have meaningful effects on a child’s daily life.
“The storyline will also introduce the young audience to audiology as a familiar profession and a potential future career path in an accessible way.”
