Glasgow City Council have provided the following update on the progress of the George Square redevelopment:
"Since the last update, works have progressed significantly around the outer square. Construction is ongoing along the south footway, with the section between South Frederick Street and Hanover Street nearing completion. The contractor is currently focusing on the stretch between Queen Street and Hanover Street. The street café space outside Drouthy’s pub has recently been handed back and is expected to be brought into use shortly.
On the north side of the square, works continue on the carriageway, with setts now being laid in two separate sections of the road. During removal of the existing carriageway, the contractor encountered uncharted underground chambers, formerly part of the tramway system. These required coordination with Scottish Power before they could be infilled. This has resulted in some delay, with the expected completion date for the north road now being 7 June. A revised construction methodology has since been introduced to help avoid any further delays prior to reopening the road.
Within George Square, all rain garden and tree pit locations have now been established, with all trees planted both within the square and externally along the north side, opposite the Millenium Hotel. STV were on site to capture coverage of the final tree being planted. Restoration works to the Sir Walter Scott Monument are progressing well, with the statue recently cleaned using a low‑pressure water wash to remove vegetation. Replacement of stone courses on the monument is also progressing well and remains on programme.
Works to the Cenotaph have now commenced, with a number of stones carefully realigned to their original positions by the stone mason. Now that the tree pits and rain gardens are in place, this will allow the contractor to continue laying the stone within the square, enabling the overall layout and finishes to become much clearer as works progress."
