Scotland’s basketball franchise Caledonia Gladiators return to league action this weekend as the Super League Basketball season gets underway.
The men’s team open their 2025/26 campaign as they take on Newcastle Eagles at the club’s Playsport Arena in East Kilbride at 4pm this Sunday 21 September.
A few weeks later, the women will play their first home game at Playsport against Nottingham Wildcats at 4pm on Sunday October 5, after beginning their Super League Basketball Trophy campaign away at Manchester Basketball this Sunday.
Both men’s and women’s teams will have strong Scottish contingents, bolstered by stars from across the globe, including the US, Canada, Sweden and France.
Men’s head coach and club legend Jonny Bunyan is preparing for his first full campaign as head coach after a spell as interim head coach and is excited for the season kicking off.
He said: “I can’t wait to get going and everyone at the club is looking forward to the men’s season beginning this Sunday against Newcastle Eagles.
“Newcastle will be bringing the biggest away support ever to our Playsport arena, so it promises to be an incredible atmosphere for both fans and players. We need our fans to get behind us and make more noise than ever before as we defend our home court for Scotland.
“I’m really pleased with how the team has come together over the off-season and we want to show off a brand of basketball that will excite our fans and make them proud right across the season.”
Women’s head coach Chantelle Handy is looking to build on a successful season in 2024/25, which saw them become the first Scottish women’s team ever to win silverware when they defeated the Oaklands Wolves 61-59 to win the Super League Basketball Trophy final.
They also became the first Scottish women’s basketball team ever to top 1000 for a home crowd and are hoping to build on those performances and attendances when the women’s league begins next month.
Chantelle said: “We had some incredible memories last season, particularly winning the Super League Basketball Trophy. It’s one of the highlights of my career.
“But ultimately, we want more silverware and brilliant moments, and to build on these great successes across this season.
“The support we’ve had for the women’s and men’s teams since moving to Playsport has been incredible, and everyone at the club is so excited to see us return to league action.”
The men’s captain for this season will be long-serving Scottish forward Fraser Malcolm, who will be joined by returning teammate Toto Fagbenle, as well as new signings such as Ethan Wright from Leicester Riders, who won the Super League Basketball Championship last season.
Homegrown stars Hannah Robb and Robyn Lewis, and French guard Mathilde Domenger are amongst returning players from last year’s trophy win and will be joined by new signings including Swedish forward Amanda Okodugha and Canadian forward Brynn Masikewich.
