About the Speakers

Dr Gökhan Gökmen is a Lecturer in Maritime Business Administration at Bursa Technical University (Turkey). He holds a PhD in Strategic Management and specialises in scenario-planning, strategic foresight, the blue economy and innovation in the maritime enterprise. His recent research investigates how top-level managers in the maritime sector frame strategy, positioning and sustainability in an evolving global landscape. With this background, he brings to his lecture first-hand insight into how shipping is being transformed—and what business leaders must understand to navigate the opportunities and risks ahead.

Professor David McKee is a leading expert in marine optics and remote sensing at the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Physics (UK). He holds a BSc and PhD in Physics and his research spans scales from microscopic particles to global satellite observations, focused particularly on “optically complex” coastal and shelf seas where conventional Earth-observation techniques struggle. He has developed novel measurement systems and models to extract meaningful biogeochemical and optical insights from marine environments, and his work bridges academia, industry and policy—offering practical pathways for businesses to harness Earth-observation technologies.

About the Stephen Young Institute for International Business:

The Stephen Young Institute for International Business, part of Strathclyde Business School, takes a multidisciplinary approach to addressing global business challenges. Named after Professor Stephen Young, former Head of Strathclyde’s Marketing Department and cofounder of Strathclyde International Business Unit, the Institute focuses on international and sustainable business, international marketing, international entrepreneurship, and global innovation. Consistent with the University’s values we are concerned with responsible management and equitable flows of value. Building on SBS’s rich history in marketing, innovation and entrepreneurship, the Institute is bold and ambitious in addressing systemic challenges, such as sustainability and inequality, through collaborative international business research and deep stakeholder engagement. The Institute was created through a generous gift from Strathclyde alum, Dr Charles Huang who completed his MBA and PhD at SBS. Dr Huang’s donation also funds the Stephen Young Global Leader Scholarship Programme, the Stephen Young Entrepreneurship Awards, and the Charles Huang Advanced Technology & Innovation Centre.
