Glasgow Film Theatre Announces January 2026 Programme

Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) – the city’s home of cinema for more than 85 years – has revealed its January 2026 programme, offering audiences an exciting mix of acclaimed new releases, big-screen favourites, international cinema, and special events. Highlights include:

  • A strong slate of acclaimed new releases including Hamnetand The History of Sound
  • The return of beloved classics including The Apartment in 4K and Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair on 35mm
  • Fokus Festival: Films from Germany, exploring women’s lives and voices across history
  • A CineMasters season celebrating the radical cinema of Jean-Luc Godard
  • Director Q&As with Ben Wheatley and Catherine Abbott
  • A special Queer Cinema Sundays preview of The Chronology of Water

New Releases

January brings an exceptional line-up of new releases to GFT, featuring some of the most talked-about films of the season. Highlights include Hamnet, a moving adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, and nominated for six Golden Globes; Peter Hujar’s Day, a portrait of the influential photographer and New York art scene icon, starring Ben Whishaw; and The Voice of Hind Rajab, an urgent and powerful work responding to contemporary global events.

Also screening are Saipan starring Steve Coogan in a dramatic retelling of Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy’s 2002 World Cup showdown; No Other Choice, Park Chan-wook’s comedy-thriller about getting ahead at work; and The History of Sound, a First World War-set musical romance starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. Plus, a preview screening of horror thriller 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, starring Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell, on 15 January before its general release the next day.

Old Favourites, Back on the Big Screen

Alongside new releases, GFT continues its tradition of bringing much-loved classics back to the cinema screen. Steven Spielberg’s tense 1971 debut, Duel, returns, alongside Billy Wilder’s New Year favourite The Apartment, both screening in 4K restoration.

Audiences can also revisit the Coen brothers’ modern classic No Country for Old Men, while Quentin Tarantino fans will have the chance to experience Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair projected on 35mm — a rare opportunity to see the director’s epic revenge saga in its intended cinematic form.

Fokus Festival: Films from Germany

January sees the return to GFT of Fokus Festival, a celebration of German cinema, with a curated selection of films united by the theme Women: Words and Worlds. Spanning different periods of German history, the programme explores women’s shifting roles, identities and lived experiences.

Screenings include Ulrike Ottinger’s The Cat Has Nine Lives; G.W. Pabst’s groundbreaking Pandora’s Box; Margarethe von Trotta’s The Left-Handed Woman; and Women in Berlin, each offering a distinct perspective on women’s lives and voices within changing social and political landscapes.

CineMasters: Jean-Luc Godard

Prompted by the release of Nouvelle Vague, Richard Linklater’s new dramatisation of the making of Breathless, GFT’s latest CineMasters season celebrates Jean-Luc Godard not only as one of cinema’s great directors, but as a radical force who reshaped what film could be.

This season invites audiences to revisit Godard’s playful, provocative and deeply influential body of work — films that challenged cinematic language, narrative convention and political engagement, and whose impact continues to be felt across world cinema.

Special Screenings and Events

January also features a special Queer Cinema Sundays preview of Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, offering audiences an early opportunity to see this highly anticipated film as part of GFT’s long-running LGBTQ+ screening strand.

The cinema is delighted to welcome several special guests for post-screening discussions. Director Ben Wheatley will join audiences for a Q&A following a screening of his latest feature Bulk, which stars Sam Riley and Noah Taylor. GFT will also host director Catherine Abbott for a Q&A after a screening of her new documentary, Becoming Victoria Wood, hosted by BAFTA-winning comedian Ashley Storrie.

Tickets for GFT’s January programme are on sale now from glasgowfilm.org and the GFT Box Office.

GFT is operated by Glasgow Film, an educational charity which also runs the award-winning Glasgow Film Festival and Glasgow Youth Film Festival, and is the lead organisation for Film Hub Scotland. GFT is the city’s original independent arthouse cinema and the home of film in Glasgow. Glasgow Film is funded by Creative Scotland, Screen Scotland and Glasgow City Council.
