Transport

Transport in January reflected the strong footfall growth with subway passengers, train passengers and bus departures all growing.

Whilst bus and subway have recovered well to meet pre-pandemic numbers, train passengers remain someway behind. 2019 saw passenger numbers regularly pass 4million per month, whereas 2026 began in line with 2025 numbers of 3.3million per month.

As has been the case for several years, the footfall recovery in Glasgow since the pandemic has been slower than other cities.

Road traffic remains a concern. December 2025 to January 2026 showed increase of 23 per cent in road traffic. There is growing discontent with the delays in M8 roadworks, where there is limited progress in work being completed. This alongside planned works across various city centre locations, including the Avenues Project, is creating problems with accessing our city.
