24/7 Waterloo Street on-slip road closure for M8 Kingston Bridge investigations and maintenance works commences Sunday 24 May 2026

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking essential bridge investigations of the M8 Kingston Bridge Complex from Monday 18th May until Saturday 13th June 2026. The main body of works requiring closure of the M8 Junction 19 Waterloo Street on-slip road will take place from Sunday 24th May until Tuesday 9th June 2026.

Waterloo Street On-Slip Road Closure

A total closure of the M8 Junction 19 Waterloo Street on-slip road will be in place, on a 24/7 basis, from Sunday 24th May until Tuesday 9th June 2026. Signed diversions will be in place with traffic intending to use the Waterloo Street on-slip road diverted onto West Campbell Street, St Vincent Street, and Newton Street. From here, traffic will be able to join the M8 westbound via the Newton Street on-slip road.  

During this closure, services that use the bus stop located at the bottom of Waterloo Street will be closed and temporarily re-located to the existing bus stop to the east of its junction with West Campbell Street. These bus services will be diverted to turn right onto Pitt Street through St Vincent Street, and Newton Street to then join the M8 westbound via the Newton Street on-slip road. Bus services that use the bus stop located between Blythswood Street and West Campbell Street will be closed and temporarily re-located to West Campbell Street. These bus services will continue onto West Campbell Street, St Vincent Street, and Newton Street. From here, traffic will be able to join the M8 westbound via the Newton Street on-slip road.   

Please contact affected bus operators for further information on how their services will be impacted. Coach bus services will follow the standard signed diversion route.  Preparatory works ahead of the Waterloo Street on-slip closure will take place from Monday 18th May until Monday 25th May 2026 and the schedule is as follows: 

Monday 18th May - Saturday 23rd May 2026:  

• Overnight closures (8pm – 6am), each night, of the A804 southbound from Argyle Street to Anderston Quay.  

Diversion: 

• Traffic diverted to join the westbound Clydeside Expressway, joining Finnieston Street southbound and finally onto the A814 Lancefield Quay eastbound, where diversion will end.  

Saturday 23rd May – Monday 25th May 2026:  

• Overnight closures (10pm – 6am) of the M8 westbound Junction 19 Newton Street on-slip road as well as the closure of the M8 westbound carriageway from Junction 18 Charing Cross off-slip road.  

Diversions:

• Traffic intending to use the M8 westbound Newton Street on-slip road will be diverted from Newton Street onto the westbound Clydeside Expressway, joining Finnieston Street southbound, through Congress Way and Pointhouse Road before joining the eastbound Clydeside Expressway. From here, traffic will be able to re-join the M8 via the westbound Junction 19 Stobcross on-slip road and diversion will end.
• Traffic intending to travel on the M8 westbound will be diverted to exit via Junction 18 to the Charing Cross off-slip road onto St. George’s Road, joining Newton Street southbound. From here, traffic will turn right onto St Vincent Street, continue onto Argyle Street, turn left onto Finnieston Street, and then will turn left to merge onto eastbound Clydeside Expressway. Traffic will be able to re-join the M8 via the westbound Junction 19 Stobcross on-slip road and diversion will end. 

M8 Junction 19 Concluding Works

Works to demobilise the site to conclude the project will take place as follows:

Sunday 7th June – Wednesday 10th June 2026:  

• Overnight closures (10pm – 6am) of the M8 westbound Junction 19 Newton Street on-slip road as well as the closure of the M8 westbound carriageway from Junction 18 Charing Cross off-slip road.  

Diversions:

• Traffic intending to use the M8 westbound Newton Street on-slip road will be diverted from Newton Street onto the westbound Clydeside Expressway, joining Finnieston Street southbound, through Congress Way and Pointhouse Road before joining the eastbound Clydeside Expressway. From here, traffic will be able to re-join the M8 via the westbound Junction 19 Stobcross on-slip road and diversion will end.
• Traffic intending to travel on the M8 westbound will be diverted to exit via Junction 18 to the Charing Cross off-slip road onto St George’s Road, joining Newton Street southbound. From here, traffic will turn right onto St Vincent Street, continue onto Argyle Street, then turn left onto Finnieston Street. Traffic will take a further left turn to merge onto the eastbound Clydeside Expressway, re-joining the M8 via the westbound Junction 19 Stobcross on-slip road and diversion will end.  

Monday 8th June – Saturday 13th June 2026:  

• Overnight closures (8pm – 6am), each night, of Newton Street from Argyle Street to Anderston Quay.  

Diversion: 

• Traffic diverted to join the westbound Clydeside Expressway, joining Finnieston Street southbound and finally onto the A814 Lancefield Quay eastbound, where diversion will end. 

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.

This project has been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, Glasgow City Council, First Bus, Stagecoach, McGill’s, SPT, Hilton Glasgow, and Glasgow Marriott Hotel.

Road users are thanked for their patience and understanding while this work is being undertaken. Advice is to allow for extra time to complete any journeys during this period, using alternative routes where possible. Various road network improvements are taking place across the M8 corridor through Glasgow, and these should be considered in any journey planning.
