Glasgow City Council have provided the following update on the progress of the George Square redevelopment:
"Since the last update, works have progressed significantly around the outer square. Construction of the north footway between Queen Street Station and North Frederick Street is now complete, as are the footway works along the west boundary of the Counting House and the Merchants House. Completion of these areas has allowed the site hoarding to be repositioned, enabling paving works to continue into the square and allowing construction of the north carriageway to begin.
As you will be aware, the north carriageway has been closed to allow construction to proceed as efficiently as possible. This phase is programmed to last approximately three months and is scheduled for completion by April. During the closure, a temporary diversion route via Anchor Lane is in place for vehicles entering from Nelson Mandela Place. In addition, a temporary loading bay has been established on St Vincent Place outside Wetherspoons to support businesses that would normally load from Anchor Lane.
Within George Square itself, excavation works have taken place throughout the area, with most of the raingardens and tree pit locations now established. Significant progress has also been made on the Sir Walter Scott monument over recent months. Scottish Water has been on site to install a new water connection ahead of a “Top Up Tap” being installed on the west side of the square. Works to the cenotaph are expected to commence in the coming weeks.
On the south side of George Square, works have begun on the footway between Queen Street and South Frederick Street. The timber decking near La Vita has been removed, and a new footway buildout is nearing completion at Drouthy’s, which will accommodate a future street café space. Excavations along the full stretch have been carried out, with natural stone already laid over a short section outside Browns restaurant."
