Member of the Week: Tunnock’s
This week we’re celebrating iconic Scottish confectionary business, Tunnock’s, as it announces a 25 per cent rise in overseas sales.
The company grew its exports to around £10m after cultivating a strong following in markets including Saudi Arabia and Australia.
Tunnock’s achieved turnover of £58.1 million in the year to 24 February, up from 52.6 million the previous year, while domestic growth also increased by 7.8 per cent to £48.1 million.
The family company has been in business since 1890, when Thomas Tunnock opened a bakery in Uddingston. Today, Tunnock’s is led by Thomas’s grandson, Boyd Tunnock, current chairman and managing director.
The business employs more than 570 people in Uddingston, after a 20,000 square foot extension to its factory to increase capacity and meet international demand was completed in 2018.
A spokesperson for Tunnock’s said that “investment is essential to maintain our position at the forefront of the market and was pasty of the business strategy to expand production capacity.”
