Judy Murray steps into new role on Kiltwalk board

Judy Murray has been appointed a trustee of Britain’s fastest growing charity event, the Kiltwalk.

The mother of tennis superstars Andy and Jamie Murray answered Sir Tom Hunter’s invitation to join the board ahead of the 2019 campaign.

Last year, 20,082 walkers helped to raise £3.6million for 1,156 charities across Scotland. A 40% top-up by The Hunter Foundation brought the impressive total to more than £5 million.

The tennis ace took the first step on her Kiltwalk journey last September, when she walked the Edinburgh Kiltwalk for the Judy Murray Foundation, which aims to bring tennis to rural and disadvantaged areas in Scotland.

Today, at an event for 100 charities in advance of the Glasgow Kiltwalk on 28 April, Judy said: “The stories of the people I met on the Kiltwalk’s Wee Wander in Edinburgh last year were humbling. I knew right away I wanted to lend my support.

“I want to encourage more charities to take advantage of the Kiltwalk’s incredible fundraising model, which tops up walkers’ fundraising efforts with a 40% boost from The Hunter Foundation. Every penny raised, and more, goes to charity.

“I’ll be walking once again to raise funds to help make tennis more accessible to everyone, no matter their age or background. What’s special about the Kiltwalk is that I’ll be walking alongside thousands of others raising funds for causes close to their own hearts.”

Sir Tom Hunter said: “Judy is an inspiration to us all and her commitment through her own Foundation to bring tennis to disadvantaged and rural areas is fantastic.

“Hopefully as a Kiltwalk Trustee she will inspire many more walkers to pop-on a bit of tartan and make a difference to the charities they care about.  It goes without saying all of Scotland is rooting for Andy’s speedy recovery.”

Registration for 2019 Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk is now open. Events will take place on:

  • 28 April in Glasgow
  • 2 June in Aberdeen
  • 18 August in Dundee
  • 15 September in Edinburgh
