A partner at Blackadders LLP who successfully overcame what looked to be a debilitating stroke has received the country’s top individual law accolade at the Scott + Co Scottish Legal Awards 2018.
Little over 12 months since the family of Simon Allison was initially told he had a 50% chance of surviving, the head of the company’s employment law team was recognised as Lawyer of the Year for his “outstanding work as a lawyer” both before and after his stroke.
At last night’s event (Thursday, 15 March) in Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms, the panel highlighted Simon overcoming the “most challenging of years” in selecting him for the award. They also praised his leadership, significant progress and awareness in employment team.
After taking ill in January 2017, doctors warned shortly afterwards that it was possible that Simon, from Dundee, would never return to work. Nevertheless, by April he was back meeting clients and in May he directed and precognosed important clients in relation to a high profile and complex tribunal claim.
Always a popular choice for giving presentations, Simon returned to regularly making speeches to his peers during the year and appeared at the Law Society Annual Conference.
In August, he walked 26 miles for the Kilt Walk and raised more than £9000 for the Stroke Association.
He said: “I am very humbled to have won the Scott & Co Legal Award 2018 - Lawyer of the Year Award. The Legal Awards is an outstanding event which encourages and recognises legal excellence.
“I would like to take the opportunity to pay tribute to the exceptional group of finalists for the Lawyer of the Year category. Also I would like to dedicate this award to the team for all the support and assistance which they have given me in the past twelve months. I work with a great group of people of whom I am very, very proud.”
Simon, who had also been a finalist in the previous year’s awards, has promised to take his team to see a Real Madrid match as a celebration of their success in winning the award.
Scott & Co Scottish Legal Awards judging panel praised Simon’s achievements, saying: “It was a very difficult category this year and every finalist had achieved significant amount of progress in their chosen speciality.
“The judges ultimately felt that the individual who had overcome the most challenging of years should receive the award. In this winner they found a motivational leader, a humble lawyer and an innovator that has gained the respect of staff and clients alike.”
