As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, City of Glasgow College showcased its range of Modern Apprentice programmes to a wide number of employers.
The MA Showcase took place at the college’s award winning City campus and welcomed over 30 employers from across Scotland.
Lisa McCarthy is Workforce Development Co-ordinator at City of Glasgow College. She said:
“Modern Apprenticeships are such an important tool in addressing the country’s skills gap. Our college currently delivers up to 550 apprenticeships across 15 different frameworks and this is expanding year on year.”
“The purpose of our Showcase event is to increase awareness of the various apprenticeships we offer. Over 30 employer organisations attended and we were able to let them know about the different funding opportunities available to them.”
The college’s Modern Apprenticeships range from maritime to creative, from hospitality to hairdressing, and from procurement to social services to digital media.
“Employer Engagement is crucial to MA delivery and Scottish Apprenticeship Week provides a great platform for apprentices to showcase their talent,” added Lisa.
Conor MacPhee, one of Scotland’s first digital media apprentices to be based with an independent production company, was at the event. He works with Raise the Roof Productions - set up by Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer - and said:
“Overall my apprenticeship is taking me in the right direction. I think it’s brought my creative side out and I really enjoy it. I attend City of Glasgow College once a week where I complete certain modules such as editing, going into studio, and learning overall about television. It’s more in-depth whereas Raise the Roof is more about putting what I learn at college into practice. It’s brilliant.”
Hospitality and Maritime apprentices from the partnership between the college and CalMac were on hand to explain their roles. The maritime students displayed their rope skills while the hospitality students prepared mocktails for those attending.
