Quarriers to offer classes with a bit of Oomph! in Glasgow service

Quarriers’ Glasgow Group Activities Service, which supports adults with learning disabilities, has partnered with Oomph! a UK-wide initiative to get people active and socialising.

Following special training, staff at the service have been accredited by Oomph! making them one of very few community-led organisations in Scotland to offer these specialist classes.

The Glasgow Group Activities Service, run by leading social care charity Quarriers, is based in community centres in the North West and Southside of the city as well as in East Dunbartonshire and offers adults with learning disabilities a range of activities including music, drama and art.

Eilidh Swatton, Group Activities Development Worker at Quarriers said: “We are thrilled to be accredited by Oomph! and to be in a position to roll out these brilliant classes across our Glasgow Group Activities Service.”

The Oomph! training taught staff key skills to energise service users, getting them active and socialising, while helping to combat loneliness and isolation, as well as promoting health and fitness.

Eilidh added: “The Oomph! accreditation has allowed us to offer service users chair-based exercises. These exercises are suitable for everyone and are a great way of promoting a healthy lifestyle as they increase heart rate. There dance classes element is not only great fun but a brilliant way to socialise. Already group members are remembering the routines and are leading the dances, taking ownership and making it their own.”

By including chair-based exercises, service users can take part at a level which is comfortable for them, from joining in with arm movements to standing and doing a full body routine. The routines are fun and easy to follow, and Oomph! classes also feature games which get people involved in a little friendly competition.

Established in 2010, Quarriers’ Glasgow Group Activities Service offers a programme of activities and events for adults with learning disabilities five days a week. The service has ambitious plans to expand into additional areas and provide service users with new, meaningful activities to try and this latest accreditation from Oomph! is an exciting step-forward.

David Terrance, Head of Community Partnerships at Oomph! said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Quarriers to enable adults with learning disabilities to move more. We’re excited about improving the quality of life for adults in Glasgow and look forward to future opportunities in the partnership.”

The service is open to any adult with learning disabilities living in the Glasgow area. To find out more about the service and to get hold of an up to date programme, contact the Group Activities Development Worker on 0141 954 1010 or via glasgowgroupactivities@quarriers.org.uk
