Give us a wave! Ladbrokes Premiership Trophy delivered by powerboat on River Clyde to celebrate Celtic’s title success

Champions Celtic powered to the Ladbrokes Premiership title this season and the trophy was delivered to them in fitting style, by powerboat on Glasgow’s iconic River Clyde on Sunday morning.

The specially commissioned Ladbrokes Premiership 2016/17 Champions powerboat was developed in partnership with P1, the organisation bringing powerboats and jet skis to Greenock next month where they will race in the second P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea. The Ladbrokes boat made the short trip up the River Clyde today to help deliver the Ladbrokes Premiership trophy by water as part of its journey to Celtic Park, before it made the final leg of the trip by land.

Among those on board were Celtic FC ambassador Tom Boyd, the last player to captain the club to a domestic treble, and Lisbon Lion Jim Craig, just days before the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s most famous success, defeating Inter Milan to become the first British team to win the European Cup.

The P1 Panther powerboat was driven by Dave Finlayson from Musselburgh, who will be flying the flag for Scotland in the ‘Spirit of Inverclyde’ boat at next month’s P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea in Greenock. It docked near to City of Glasgow College from where the trophy travelled by road to Celtic Park in advance of the champions’ final home league game of the season, against Hearts.

David MacDonald, Media and Sponsorship, Ladbrokes, said: “Season 2016/17 has been a remarkable year for Celtic and so Ladbrokes felt it merited a remarkable event to mark their achievements.  Trophy presentation day is all about celebration and excitement and what better way to start the day than having club legends deliver the Ladbrokes Premiership trophy via the historic River Clyde route in the club’s home city to Celtic Park.  We hope Celtic supporters enjoy their day and congratulate all at the Club on being Ladbrokes Premiership Champions 2016/17!”

Rob Wicks, Powerboat P1 Managing Director, added: “We were thrilled to work with Ladbrokes, the SPFL and Celtic to enhance their Ladbrokes Premiership trophy day celebrations. The Ladbrokes Premiership powerboat looked spectacular – it is definitely one of the most thrilling journeys P1 has been involved in.

“The event was also useful practice for Dave ahead of next month’s Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea and we hope it has helped generate even more interest in our free-to-attend event which will have many more powerboats racing at high speed and lots more entertainment too.”

To watch a fleet of powerboats like this in high-speed race action, come along to the free-to-attend 2017 P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea in Greenock on Saturday, 24 June and Sunday, 25 June. More info
