Industry: Broadcast and TV production
About the organisation: STV is Scotland’s home of news, entertainment and drama, serving audiences with quality content on air, online and on demand.
Key sustainability highlights
“STV is in a perfect position as a broadcaster and programme maker to raise awareness of environmental issues and we recognise the crucial role we can play in helping to effect change. STV Zero is an ambitious new strategy we hope will galvanise support from our colleagues, partners and audiences.” STV Chief Executive, Simon Pitts
STV has already achieved some of its shorter term STV Zero strategy targets. The broadcaster has moved to renewable energy across the majority of its sites and reduced consumption; removed single use plastics for corporate catering across offices and productions; is in the process of moving to hybrid for its fleet of vehicles and has partnered with BAFTA’s industry-wide body Project albert, and the Advertising Association’s Ad Net Zero, whose aims are very much aligned to STV’s.
Raising environmental awareness and effect change
STV will use its position as broadcaster and producer to raise environmental awareness and effect change. Climate Change Correspondent, Laura Piper, has been reporting on the issues for STV News and in the coming months in the build up to COP26, there will be an increased focus on sustainability across STV’s programming and news coverage, both on air and online.
Launch 'Green Hub'
STV recently partnered with Smart Energy, a non-profit campaign helping everyone understand the importance of smart meters and their benefits to people and the environment. The initial phase comprises on air marketing and the launch of a ‘Green Hub’ on STV Player – a special collection of programmes and documentaries all about the environment, and there will be more on this partnership coming soon.
Committed to gaining albert certification for all news, current affairs and STV Studios programming
In programme making – STV has partnered with industry-wide initiative project albert. Albert provides an industry standard for the production sector to measure emissions arising from its activities and supports programme makers in reducing waste and carbon emissions. STV achieved its first ‘albert’ certification in news and current affairs for its Leaders Debate as part of comprehensive Holyrood election coverage and shows currently in production are seeking albert certification too.
