International Trade Courses

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce run a number of training programmes designed to help members pursue business interests amongst international markets. Capitalising on overseas potential can open many doors for Glasgow's business community, allowing them to take their products and services overseas and increasing opportunities to trade.

Below are some examples of the many workshops which will be running throughout the year, giving businesses the help they need to successfully operate overseas.

Letters of Credit - 1 Day Programme

Letters of Credit present tremendous opportunities and challenges to the exporter. They represent a relatively secure method of payment but a very high proportion of documents presented to UK banks are still rejected on first presentation - approximately 80%! This programme will explain the roles of the parties, clarify the procedures and recommend practical ways in which exporters can establish best practice in order to ensure payment every time.

Incoterms ® 2010 - 1/2 Day Programme

The Incoterms ® 2010 are the newest revision of the international commercial rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce. The current revision came into force 1 January 2011. This half-day seminar gives an in-depth view of the rules and outlines the major changes between Incoterms 2000 and the current vision ensuring  you are up-to-date and that your shipments are costed correctly for the obligation and risk for the buyer and seller. This programme is designed for anyone that works in international trade who should know Incoterms® 2010, rules, risk and obligations of buyer and seller.

Export Documentation and Processes - 1 Day Programme

This one-day programme is an introduction to the processes and routines to be followed when exporting. From enquiry through to delivery, we will follow the process and understand the subsequent documentation requirements for getting the cargo to its destination successfully. We will cover principles, documentation, their individual worth and how to export successfully to receive payment. The programme is suitable for anyone new to exporting and for experienced exporters who need a refresher.

Import Documentation and Processes - 1 Day Programme

This one-day programme is an introduction to the processes and routines to be followed when importing, from placing the initial enquiry through to taking delivery. We will follow the process and understand the subsequent documentation requirements and gain a clear understanding of what the terminology means while we explore the most cost effective methods of importing.

Bonds and Guarantees Overview - 1/2 Day Programme

The aim of this programme is to give an overview of the types of Bonds and Guarantees that are used in international trade and the international rules that apply. The trainer will explain the nature and role of the different types of Bonds, Guarantees and Standby Letters of Credit in relation to export tenders and contracts. The programme also highlights the problems, risks and hidden costs, giving guidance on the monitoring and control of those risks and costs.  It covers uniform rules for demand guarantees (ICC 458) and compares ICC international standby practices (ISP98) with UCP for documentary credits, UCP500.

All programmes will be held at Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
