Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts, part of the award winning family housebuilder Mactaggart & Mickel Group, has announced that work is underway on a £1.1 million tender to develop the fourth phase of a veterans housing project in Renfrewshire for the charity Erskine.
Erskine provides nursing and medical care for former members of the British Armed Forces. Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts will be building 10 new veterans cottages which will supplement the 24 the Glasgow-based company has already completed. The construction project complements a wide range of housing and specialist builds that Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts will be embarking upon in 2012, a pipeline culminating contracts worth £35 million.
During 2011 Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts reported a 63 per cent increase in turnover to £4.9 million. The company also reported that it had invested time in strengthening relationships with both private and social housing sectors, a process that has underpinned solid growth. The divisional three-year plan is on target to increase turnover from £4.9 million in the previous financial year to close to £6 million in 2011/12. Currently turnover is forecast to rise to circa £16 million in 2012/13.
The pipeline, demonstrating countercyclical performance in the current construction market, includes a 228 unit, £27 million undertaking, for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village. Construction started on site in January 2012 and the first phase is now well underway, completion of the project is expected in early 2014 and a high quality retrofit planned after the Games to deliver a new residential hub in the area.
In Denny, Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts will shortly commence work on the Carrongrove National Housing Trust Scheme (NHT), worth £3.2 million. An innovative partnership has been formed with Falkirk Council and Scottish Government to deliver 27 affordable housing units. The groundbreaking model is one of a new breed of funding structures aimed at providing affordable homes in Scotland.
Finally in Ayrshire two separate contracts have been agreed. The first is to build four retail units including a Co-Op minimarket valued at £0.9 million; the second is for 25 affordable homes for West of Scotland Housing Association worth £2.7 million, both within the Group's latest development Greenan Views.
Peter Shepherd, director of Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts commented: "The last 12 months have been very positive and our new contract wins are testament to our strategic approach to generating business and a committed team undertaking high quality work. The diversity of these contracts represents another successful milestone in the company's strategy of building a varied and balanced portfolio. We are focused on delivering our wide range of projects and this pipeline shows we work equally well with commercial clients, housing associations, registered social landlords and professional firms such as insurance companies and insolvency practices."
