One of the country's largest independent travel groups, Glasgow-based Barrhead Travel, has been selected as a national finalist in the 2012 European Business Awards.
The company, which employs close to 600 staff across the UK, is
nominated for the Infosys Business of the Year Award with Turnover
of €150m or higher. The category recognises exceptional financial
growth, strong business development and market leadership.
H&M won last year's award with 3,000 businesses being invited
to enter. This is reflected by tough competition again this year
with Barrhead Travel competing against some of the strongest and
most well known companies in Europe including AstraZenica,
Coca-Cola and Sony Europe.
Sharon Munro, chief executive at Barrhead Travel said: "It is fantastic to be nominated for this award and it represents a great return for all our hard work throughout the year. To be recognised on a European stage is a great achievement, especially considering the range and calibre of companies nominated. It is no secret the last few years have been challenging for all companies and we are really pleased to be flying the flag, not just for Scotland, but for the whole of the UK in Europe."
The nominations will be judged by a panel of 40 leading business figures from all over Europe including: Keith Jones, senior operational manager for Scottish Power; Christian Purslow, former managing director of Liverpool Football Club; and Stephen Pattison, chief executive of the International Chamber of Commerce in the UK.
Judges will be looking for evidence of inventiveness, ethical credentials and long term planning especially during "dynamic market conditions". The nominees will be whittled down through a process of presentations to the judging panel with winners being unveiled at a ceremony in April 2013.
