Scottish travel agency Barrhead Travel has announced unprecedented growth in online sales for the six months from August 2011 to January 2012.
The company invested £730,000 in a move that saw it re-launch its main site, barrheadtravel.co.uk, create two niche cruise websites, and initiate its first international web presence with sites in India, Canada and the USA. As a result, the group's online traffic grew by 30% in 2011 and its online sales increased by 39%.
Steven Curran, head of e-commerce, said, "Barrhead Travel was one of the first travel agencies to embrace the internet many years ago, and we still firmly believe that a robust online presence is crucial to our company's success. The substantial investment we have made is already showing excellent returns and our online strategy will continue to evolve to reflect customer demand and the products available in the marketplace."
The head of IT cited training and development of the existing web development and marketing team, and the hiring of additional IT and Marketing professionals with specialist expertise, as well as the strength of the Barrhead Travel brand, as being integral to the success of its online presence. "We have exactly the right mix in place to take us to the next level in online sales," Steven added. "Our goal is to establish the company as the UK's number one online travel retailer, and we are well on track to achieving this."
