From Scotland to the Olympic and Paralympic Games - the story behind six Scottish athletes' journey to London 2012
A brand new one off special, The Scots Going For Gold is an enlightening one hour documentary which follows six of Scotland's Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls in the final leg of their quest to compete at the world's premier sporting event. Gaining an insight into their demanding training sessions, we witness first hand the effort, ambition and determination it takes to compete at the very top level as these athletes prepare for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The programme follows swimmer Craig Benson; 3000 metre steeplechase athlete Eilish McColgan; lightweight boxer Josh Taylor; handball player Lynn McCafferty; canoeist Tim Baillie and wheelchair rugby player Mike Kerr. All six athletes have been selected to represent Team GB or ParalympicsGB at the forthcoming London 2012 Games for the first time.
The Scots Going For Gold shows the trials and tribulations that the athletes and their families face as they gear up for the Games. Craig can't drive, so his parents have to rise with the sun to drive him to his training sessions at 5am each morning. Lynn and her husband Gary have never actually lived together properly since they got married six years ago. They are planning a long overdue honeymoon after the Games. Josh is struggling to maintain the correct weight to compete as a lightweight and the programme shows how his mum hides chocolate from him, just in case he's tempted. Eilish has fought back from injury after breaking her foot last year and has had to start from scratch to get back on top form, only finding out that she had made Team GB a few weeks ago. Tim was unsuccessful in qualifying for the Athens and Beijing Olympic Games and he and his parents reflect on the time effort and money dedicated to getting him on the GB Team. Mike travels to England to train and covers hundreds of miles a week. He talks about almost giving it all up had it not been for his family and friends' unwavering support.
The programme delves into the challenges our hopefuls face as they strive to compete at the biggest event of their lives. As the clock runs down to the Games, The Scots Going For Gold shows us exactly why these six athletes made the team!
The programme is narrated by Scottish Actor Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey).
