Comedian and broadcaster Fred MacAulay completed his challenge of trekking the mighty West Highland Way in aid of the STV Appeal 2012 on Saturday (21 July) - and what's more, he raised £15,000 along the way.
During his six day West Highland Way Challenge, Fred walked the demanding 96 miles from Milngavie to Fort William and was joined each day by a series of well known faces.
Fred was joined on day one by STV's very own News anchorman, John MacKay and Scottish rugby legend, Scott Hastings, along with his beloved pooch Parker. Day two saw Fred joined by his son Jack and his dog Izzy, along with beauty queens, Miss Scotland 2010, Katharine Brown and Miss Scotland 2011, Jennifer Reoch. Still Game stars Jane McCarry and Mark Cox braved the wet weather and midges on day three on the Rowardennan to Inverarnan leg and David Hayman saw the sun come out again for day four. Hue and Cry's, Pat and Greg Kane kept Fred's spirits up on the penultimate day and Clare Grogan and Nick Nairn joined Fred for the final stretch from Kinlochleven to the finishing line in Fort William, where Fred was given a Highland welcome by local piper Ally Weir, from Inverlochy.
And as if that wasn't enough of a challenge, after each day's trek, Fred performed a comedy gig for locals on his West Highland Wahey experience.
Fred said:
"I know thousands of people walk the West Highland Way every year, but now that I've joined the ones who have completed it, I'd like to say how much I appreciated the beautiful scenery we're so lucky to have here in Scotland. It was a most memorable week, with great support from friends and family who walked with me, and also from so many people along the way. We all hope that we'll encourage the people of Scotland to donate to the STV Appeal 2012 to help the less fortunate children of Scotland."
Elizabeth Partyka, Deputy Director of Channels at STV said:
"Fred is a total star. Not only did he trek for almost 100 miles but he performed gigs all along the way and all on behalf of the Appeal, we are so grateful. The man has boundless energy and it's all for a fantastic cause. He's definitely worthy of a sponsor."
Fred's efforts were supported by iconic treat manufacturer Tunnock's. Not only did they give a cash donation via Fred's Just Giving page, but they kept him going with all the Teacakes and Caramel Wafers he could eat along the way.
