The SECC has significantly increased its position as a top ranked entertainment venue, earning its place amongst the world's finest arenas.

The "Top 100 Worldwide Entertainment Venues" is compiled by the leading industry publication Pollstar, and is based on attendance and the volume of tickets sold by arenas for concerts and special events.

SECC has raised the bar with its competitors by soaring to number 13 globally - beating major venues such as The Staples Center in LA and Madison Square Gardens in New York.

Major acts at the venue this year such as Snow Patrol, Guns n Roses, JLS and Strictly Come Dancing are thought to be a contributing factor to achieving the status on top industry poll which has seen the venue climb from 45th (2010), 28th (2011) to a position just below the top ten venues of the world in less than three years.

John Sharkey, Chief Executive, SEC Ltd said:

"To have increased our position in these rankings so notably is fantastic news and we owe this to the excellent team work between our staff and the relationships we have with promoters and event organisers.

"This news could not have come at a better time as the SECC evolves and transforms its entertainment complex with the addition of the Hydro - our new 12,000 seater world class arena due for completion next year.

"The Hydro will allow us to offer our customers a wider choice and even higher level of world class entertainment and with an expected 1million visitors a year the journey to become one of the top 5 busiest indoor arenas in the world is a target well within our grasp."

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Deputy Chief Executive Richard Muir said: "This is terrific news for Glasgow. It's a real reflection of the SECC's strong reputation and capability of holding all manner of entertainment events, not to mention the large number of conferences it hosts, all of which benefits the wider city economy. And to be ranked ahead of world-famous venues such as Madison Square Garden is a real feather in the cap.

"At the moment we are all very excited by the ongoing development of The Hydro Arena at The SECC which will be a world class addition to the Glasgow's overall entertainment venue offering.

"We congratulate John and his team on this success and anticipate more exciting and positive developments with SEC Ltd in the years ahead."
