Scottish Water Planning Major Glasgow Upgrade

Scottish Water is consulting with stakeholders ahead of a major upgrade of parts of the network of water pipes in Glasgow city centre.
It is holding a series of information events at The Lighthouse, Mitchell Lane, Glasgow on July 10, 11 and 12 between 2pm and 8pm to allow customers and any interested parties to drop in and speak with key members of the project team and learn more about the project.
The rehabilitation work will improve services by replacing five miles of ageing distribution mains below some of the city's busiest streets.
Many of the pipes that supply water to thousands of properties and customers in the city centre date back to the Victorian age and the area has suffered from a number of bursts and disruption to supply recently.
The £3.5m upgrade - which will start in late July and is expected to be completed in about a year - will reduce the risk of bursts and the inconvenience to customers, road users and pedestrians caused by them. It will also help provide clearer, fresher drinking water to properties in the area.
Mr Geoff Aitkenhead, Scottish Water's Asset Management Director, said: "This major investment by Scottish Water is great news for Glasgow and underlines Scottish Water's commitment to supporting the regeneration of the city and improving our infrastructure in the city centre.
"It will benefit our customers for many years to come. It will also help the city as it prepares for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and other major events."
The streets where most of the work will be carried out include George Street, Hope Street, Bath Street, Renfield Street, St Vincent Street, Wellington Street and Sauchiehall Street.
