GLASGOW has climbed an impressive 13 places in the latest global ranking of major financial centres.

The city jumped from 46th place to 33rd spot in the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI), compiled twice-yearly by Z/Yen Group.

Glasgow also entered the European top 10 for the first time ahead of other influential cities including Amsterdam, Oslo, Vienna, Brussels, Madrid and Milan.

The city sits in 10th place, just one spot behind Edinburgh, which dropped three places in the September global rankings to 32nd position.

The Index, which measures the world's top 75 financial centres, confirmed the dominant position of London, New York and Hong Kong as the world's top financial centres.

Despite the current economic climate Glasgow's International Financial Services District (IFSD) has helped to maintain the city's momentum over the past 12 months with a series of new job announcements from companies such as Barclays, Santander, esure, Morgan Stanley, NFU Mutual, Tesco Bank, HSBC and Scottish Friendly.

A spokesperson for Glasgow's International Financial Services District said: "This is great news for Glasgow and an endorsement of what has been achieved in the city's financial services sector over the past 12 months.

"Entering the top 10 European financial centres for the first time is without doubt a significant achievement but there is absolutely no room for complacency.

"Throughout the current economic difficulties we will continue to work hard to develop Glasgow's (IFSD) and maintain the city's position as a leading European location for financial services employers."

Published by the Z/Yen Group twice per year, GFCI uses 28,604 financial centre assessments completed by 1,887 financial services professionals.

Since 2007, well over 100,000 assessments from more than 6,000 respondents have built the index. The September index is the 10th to be published.
