More good news for the city's educational establishments as the  University of Glasgow is ranked 1st in the UK for satisfaction in a worldwide survey of international students.

An impressive 96% of the institution's international students agree that Glasgow is 'a good place to be', according to the International Student Barometer 2011.

Most excitingly, the university came out top of the entire survey of 127 institutions for the social activities on offer, with 84.2% of students giving them full marks. Of all the universities in the UK, Glasgow was rated as having the 'best sport's facilities' and 'best online library', while it was also recognised in the poll as being the finest out of the 12 Russell Group universities surveyed for 'learning experience' and the 'quality of its lectures'.

The survey, which is the largest of its kind, canvasses international students' views on the teaching, services and the overall experience of their chosen university.

In other good news, a pioneering research institute to drive forward the search for new and better medicines - and inspire the scientists of tomorrow - opened at the University of Strathclyde this week

The Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences brings together leading researchers in the chemical, biological and pharmaceutical sciences to develop new treatments for some of the UK's biggest killers, including cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The institute's new building in the heart of Glasgow will enable multi-disciplinary researchers to co-locate, helping them bring drugs and treatments to the market more quickly and develop urgently-needed solutions to global diseases including malaria and TB.

Both of these developments reinforce Glasgow as top class city of education, offering students some of the best facilities, social activities and prospects of any destination in the world.  With all of this in mind its no wonder the city is home to over 45,000 students, contributing massively to every aspect of the regions economy.

Your Chamber would like to congratulate both the University of Glasgow and Strathclyde for these great achievements and their valuable services to the city.
