Byres Road is bidding to be named the best street in Britain. The West End thoroughfare is a finalist for "The Great Street" award.

The road, known for its bars and eateries, has been shortlisted in the final three for the chance to win the award, presented annually by think-tank, The Academy of Urbanism. Byres Road's nomination was based on its user friendliness, commercial success, functionality and transport links and its environmental sustainability.

Stephen Gallagher, a spokesman for the Academy, said: "Byres Road is the heart and soul of Glasgow's West End and is a cosmopolitan mix with music stores, newsagents, flower sellers, jewellers and opticians; an eclectic street, with a whole range of bars, restaurants and shops to suit all manner of tastes."

This week the Academy announced finalists for the titles of European City of the Year, Great Town, Great Neighbourhood, Great Street and Great Place. The winners will be announced at its annual Urbanism Awards in London on November 11.

This is the second successive year Glasgow has been acknowledged by the Academy, having been chosen as European City of the Year 2011.
